The left is Joel Meyerowitz's photograph , the right is mine.
I choose Joel's work "On the Road", which uses a symmetrical structural method to show the different states of trees on both sides of the same road. I chose a photo I took on the road, which also imitated Joel's photography method by using symmetrical structures. The difference was that the trees on both sides of the photo I took had similar shapes but different heights. I think the biggest challenge in this assignment is that when I find the photographer's photos, it is difficult for me to find similar works taken from similar angles, because some photos have a sense of time and their angles make me feel a little fuzzy. However, in the later shooting, I found the direction and tried to imitate, and finally found the way to shoot. In the future, I will try and practice shooting more works by imitating and learning other photographers' works as inspiration.
Hi Qiannan! I was drawn to the first image of the open ocean-scape as contrasted with Joel Meyerowitz's piece. I like your take on his piece, as your landscape was the same content but can tell a whole other story due to your personal techniques. The color on the image is great; bold and clear blue, causing the audience to take interest. the lighting is also very unique, due to the deepness of the sky and how it was not over washed by the sun. The original image brings a sense of calm, but your image brings it in a way that is different from the mimicking image- bright and new as opposed to vintage and nostalgic. I think that…
Hi there Qiannan, I think that you have done an excellent job at emulating the photograph of Joel Meyerowitz. You perfectly utilize the symmetrical structure which is very pleasing to look at, and paired with the match of style in scenery to Joel Meyerowitz, I think that your emulation has been extremely successful. I cant wait to see more of your work! Best, Storme
Great photo Qiannan!! I think you emulated Joel Meyerowitz's photograph really nicely. It can be so hard to find places similar to another photographers work but you found a perfect spot. I really like the cool colors of this photo it always gives a vintage nostalgic feel to the picture. If I could critique anything I'd say the original picture is more of a dark picture. However, I think yours still does good at emulating their work you both use the natural lighting of the sky to set a mood for the image.
